Chapter Five

RACE DAY

I spent the rest of the week preparing for the big race.

At school, I didn’t talk to Spike, Marcy or Bella about the race. We had agreed to keep our race plans and preparations secret.

I didn’t want them to know anything about my jet ski. If they knew how good it was, they probably wouldn’t want to race me. They’d be too scared. I would be too, if I were racing against me.

Marcy did ask me if my jet ski was yellow like my dad’s golf clubs.

I told her that she would just have to wait and see! She said her dad, who plays golf with my dad, said that my dad had new yellow golf clubs.

On Saturday morning, the sun was shining. What great weather for race day, I thought as I dressed.

I made my last-minute race preparations during breakfast. I told Dog that I was going to race across Duck Lake on my jet ski. Then I told Dog that he was going to be my crew and would ride with me.

Dog stopped eating his biscuits. He looked up at me and then ran straight out the back door.
